Raytheon Demos Ground-Based Version of Joint Precision Approach, Landing System

Raytheon has performed the second demonstration of a land-based expeditionary variant of its Joint Precision Approach and Landing System before a group of global military officials at Naval Air Station Patuxent River in Maryland.

Military leaders from the U.S., Italy, Japan, the Netherlands and the U.K. observed how the ground-based JPALS guided multiple F-35Cs to land on a designated runway landing point using multiple approaches, Raytheon said Monday.

The landing system was fully operational in 70 minutes on the first day and 50 minutes on the second day of the demonstration, according to Matt Gilligan, vice president at Raytheon’s intelligence, information and services unit.

This proof-of-concept event marks the second time this year that F-35 pilots used a reconfigured mobile variant of JPALS to support landings in austere environments.

The precision landing platform uses GPS sensors to guide aircraft onto carriers in all types of weather and surface conditions up to Sea State 5.
